Interpretation means converting spoken or signed messages from one language to another in real-time. Interpreters must work quickly, communicate ideas clearly, and adapt to different settings, like meetings or medical visits.
Interpretation refers to oral translation during communication. Common types include:
- Simultaneous Interpretation: The interpreter translates in real-time as the speaker speaks (e.g., UN conferences).
- Consecutive Interpretation: The interpreter waits for the speaker to pause and then translates (e.g., during interviews or medical consultations).
- Whispered Interpretation (Chuchotage): The interpreter whispers the translation directly to a listener in real-time.
- Relay Interpretation: A two-step process where one language is first interpreted into a bridge language, and then into the target language.
- Over-the-Phone Interpretation (OPI): Interpretation services provided via phone, commonly used in customer service or emergency contexts.
- Sight Translation: Reading a document aloud in a target language.
- Community/Public Service Interpretation: Used in hospitals, courts, or government offices to assist non-native speakers.
