Le défi de la traduction de l’autobiographie : transmettre l’intimité d’une culture à l’autre.

Abstract

This article examines the unique challenges of translating autobiographies,

where the task is to convey an author’s personal and cultural intimacy while

preserving their narrative identity. First and foremost, the study explores the

specificities of the autobiographical genre and the issues of fidelity and cultural

adaptation in translation. Secondly, it identifies linguistic obstacles, such as translating

idioms and preserving the author’s voice, as well as cultural challenges related to

taboos and different perceptions of intimacy. To overcome these challenges, several

strategies are proposed: the use of explanatory notes, intercultural collaboration, and stylistic adaptation in conformity with norms and practices in the target culture. The

article concludes on the importance of integrating these considerations into translator

training, envisioning autobiographical translation as a bridge for dialogue between

cultures.
